How an Ourika Valley Tour Works
Where the valley is, the stops on the way, what the day costs and includes, lunch, the walk to the waterfalls, the river in rain, and when to pick another day out.
An Ourika Valley tour is a day out of Marrakech into the foothills of the High Atlas, up the valley of the Ourika river to Setti Fatma, the village where the road ends, and the waterfalls above it. It is 36 km by road from Jemaa el-Fnaa to Tnine Ourika, where the valley opens, and 63 km to the road end at Setti Fatma. The day this page follows is Marrakech City Life SARL’s Marrakesh: Ourika Waterfalls, Atlas Mountains, Guide + Lunch, listed at 7 hours, from $16 in current promotion (usually $21) a person, checked November 2026, with 26,978 reviews. Despite the title, lunch is an option you add when you book.
The short answer
Take a shared day tour: pickup from your hotel or riad, a local guide, the stops on the way and the time at Setti Fatma all come in one per-person price. Add the lunch option if you want a sit-down meal by the river settled in advance; leave it off if you would rather choose on the day. Bring cash either way, for drinks, tips and the argan cooperative’s shop. Book a private trip only if you want your own vehicle and your own pace.

Where everything is

The Ourika Valley runs south-east from the plain of Marrakech into the High Atlas, in Al Haouz Province. The road leaves the city through the olive groves, reaches the river at Tnine Ourika, a market town 36 km from Jemaa el-Fnaa, and follows the river upstream past Amazigh (Berber) villages, terraced fields and riverside restaurants for another 26 km to Setti Fatma, where it stops. The Moroccan National Tourist Office calls the valley a popular day trip from Marrakech and places Setti Fatma a short distance from seven waterfalls that cascade from the rocks above. Those waterfalls, and the river below them, are what the tours come for.
Without stops a car takes about 80 minutes from the medina to the road end, by a routing estimate without traffic. The tours stop on the way, so the morning is half over by the time you reach Setti Fatma: Marrakech to Ourika Valley has the road and the other ways to get there.
The day, step by step
Pickup is from central Marrakech hotels or a nearby meeting point, and collection can take 30 to 40 minutes. The pickup message, sent by WhatsApp and email from 7 pm the evening before, names the place, so the first half hour or more goes on collecting the group. About 50 minutes of road later the van reaches Tnine Ourika for a photo stop.
The next stop is the Amal Ourika Cooperative, run by women who extract argan oil. You see how the oil is made, and the cooperative is also a shop; buying is up to you. Somewhere in the valley the group also stops at a Berber house for mint tea, and there is a small breakfast along the way.
Then comes the longer drive up to Setti Fatma, about 80 minutes there for the guided walk to the waterfalls, and about 80 minutes by the river for tea, free time and lunch if you booked it. The road back takes about 75 minutes. Marrakech City Life SARL puts the whole day at about 7 to 8 hours from pickup to return.

What the price includes, and lunch
The day is from $16 in current promotion (usually $21) a person on GetYourGuide, checked November 2026: a seat in a shared group, not a price per car. It covers pickup and drop-off in Marrakech, the van with air conditioning and a licensed driver, a local guide, the guided walk to the waterfalls, the Berber house and its mint tea, the argan cooperative and a small breakfast. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, and you can reserve now and pay later.
Lunch is the trap in the title. “Guide + Lunch” on the listing means lunch is available: a starter, a main course and a dessert by the river, as option 2. Drinks are extra unless the option says otherwise. Which option the from-price is for is not stated, so pick your date and compare the options’ prices on the calendar before you book. Almost every Ourika day sold from Marrakech works the same way; Ourika Valley tour price lists which ones put lunch in an option and which include it.

The walk to the waterfalls
The walk starts in Setti Fatma, follows the river, crosses it on small bridges and climbs to the falls. It is guided and optional: the trails are rocky, uneven and steep in places, so anyone who would rather not climb waits at a riverside restaurant with the mountains in view. Wear shoes with grip; on some tours you may have to step into water. Marrakech City Life SARL’s day is not suitable for wheelchair users, people with limited mobility, babies under 1 or people over 70. Setti Fatma waterfalls covers the walk, how long the tours give it and what to bring.
The river in rain
The Ourika is a mountain river, and the waterfalls are a stream whose flow varies with the season and the rainfall. After the floods of 1995, which killed nearly 200 people according to the Agence du Bassin Hydraulique du Tensift, the valley was given a flood-alert system: measuring stations up the valley, an alarm that broadcasts warnings, and the power for the provincial governor to order at-risk areas evacuated. Before you go, look at the bulletins of Morocco’s national weather service for Al Haouz Province and ask the operator about the river the evening before. Ourika Valley weather explains the system, where to check and what to do if rain spoils the day.
When it is busy
The valley is an easy reach from Marrakech, and it is a popular place: it can be busy, especially at weekends and in the high season. If crowds matter to you, go on a weekday, or choose a day that gives the waterfalls more time, such as Mountain soul trips’ riverside lunch and waterfalls hike, with about 2 hours 40 minutes at Setti Fatma.
When to pick another day out
Want waterfalls with a boat ride at their foot, and do not mind about 3 hours of road each way? Ourika or Ouzoud compares the two waterfall days. Short of time, or travelling with people who will not do a full day? A half day or a private day has the shorter morning trips and the private options.

Ourika Valley Tour: Questions
How far it is, how long the day takes, what it costs, whether lunch is in the price, the walk to the waterfalls, the river in rain, what to wear and Ourika or Ouzoud.
36.4 km by road from Jemaa el-Fnaa in Marrakech to Tnine Ourika, where the valley opens, and 62.9 km to the end of the valley road at Setti Fatma. A car without stops needs about 80 minutes to the road end. The day tours stop on the way and give about 50 minutes to the first stop. See Marrakech to Ourika Valley.
Most full-day tours are listed at 7 hours, about 7 to 8 hours from pickup to return. Marrakech City Life SARL's day spends about 80 minutes at Setti Fatma and 80 minutes by the river. Shorter days of 5 to 6 hours 30 minutes exist; see a half day or a private day.
From $16 a person for Marrakech City Life SARL's shared day on GetYourGuide (checked November 2026), with pickup, a local guide, a small breakfast, the argan cooperative and mint tea in a Berber house. Private trips start from $84 a person for a private day with a guide in the valley (checked November 2026). See Ourika Valley tour price.
On most of these tours, only if you book the lunch option. On the tour this site follows, lunch by the river (starter, main course and dessert) is option 2, and drinks are extra. Which option the from-price is for is not stated, so pick a date and read the price of each option before you book. See Ourika Valley tour price.
Rocky, uneven trails, steep in places; on the tour this site follows, the guided walk is optional and you can wait by the river instead. On some tours the walk is rated moderate, with slippery rocks and narrow paths, and you may have to step into water; wear shoes with grip. We found no length or grade for the walk from a tourism office or park. See Setti Fatma waterfalls.
Seven, in the words of the Moroccan National Tourist Office, which places Setti Fatma a short distance from seven waterfalls that cascade from the rocks above. How many a tour walks to is not stated. On Mountain soul trips' day the first waterfall is relatively easy to reach, and going further takes a little more effort and sturdy shoes.
The flow varies with the season and the rainfall: the waterfall is a mountain stream, so how much water falls depends on the rain before your visit.
Heavy rain can bring floods down the Ourika river, which is why the valley has a flood-alert system. The Agence du Bassin Hydraulique du Tensift set it up after the floods of 1995, which killed nearly 200 people, and in 2011 extended it to 11 alert stations along the Ourika wadi. Check the national weather service's bulletins before you go and ask the operator the evening before. See Ourika Valley weather.
Walking shoes with good grip (some listings suggest water shoes or sturdy trainers), a hat and sunscreen, and a light jacket: the mountains can be cooler than Marrakech. Bring cash for the cooperative shop, drinks and tips.
Ourika is the shorter day: 62.9 km by road from Jemaa el-Fnaa to Setti Fatma, against 159.8 km to Ouzoud, about 3 hours each way on an Ouzoud day trip. The Ouzoud days add a boat ride at the foot of the falls on some options; the Ourika days add the valley stops, a Berber house and the river. See Ourika or Ouzoud.
